Copper Metal Grades
Trans-Matic regularly forms the following grades of copper for use in deep drawn metal stampings:
- C11000 copper
- C21000 copper
If your application calls for a specific grade of copper that is notlisted here, please contact us with the specifications for your parts. With our decades of copper stamping experience, we have worked withjust about every grade of metal that can be deep drawn and we canprobably meet the needs of your project.
Copper Stampings Characteristics
Copper is commonly used as a deep drawn metal for parts that are exposed to the elements and parts that transfer fluids. Copper deep drawn parts are found in temperature sensing applications, electronic/electrical, plumbing, thermal, as decorative components and many more applications.
As with all metals, copper has its own advantages and disadvantages for deep drawn parts. Some of the characteristics of copper that affect its desirability for deep drawing include:
- Copper is corrosion resistant
- Copper tarnishes quickly, with substantial discoloration
- Copper is very expensive when compared to low carbon steel, in the neighborhood of eight times the price. The pricing for copper is very volatile and it is typically purchased at market or spot buy prices.
- Copper is excellent for brazing and soldering
- Copper can be polished for decorative purposes; however, the polished copper must be coated to minimize tarnishing
Copper Forming Benefits and Challenges
Aside from the various characteristics of copper, the metal also presents benefits and challenges to deep drawing manufacturers that can impact the deep drawn stamping process. It is in part due to some of these factors that deep drawing expertise does not necessarily transfer from one type of metal to another. These benefits and challenges include:
- Copper has similar tonnage requirements when compared to low carbon steels
- Copper is particularly malleable
- Due to its high price, scrap copper is very valuable. It becomes increasingly important to make effective use of material, and scrap recovery and security is important.
- Copper offers good dimensional stability (+/- .001" or .04mm)
- Variable wall thickness can be achieved
The characteristics, benefits and challenges listed above should be considered from the perspective of a stamping company. To assure you match the right grade for your application please consult a metallurgist or conduct your own research before choosing a grade of steel.
